Bacon Brings World Peace and Why RSS is No Longer a Necessity

@holyjuan (author of comic) posted the Baconizer part 2 this morning, and was even kind enough to Tweeted me as a heads-up. Now that I think about it, ever since I've started prolifically Tweeting, I haven't subscribed to a blog in a long time, just their Tweet streams.

Wow, the power of social media is pretty awesome. Makes the world smaller, and the connections way personal. Thanks, Juan for finding and Tweeting me :)

...to clarify for all the sticklers, I mean RSS Reader; specifically UI and or app. JEEZ.

As I was saying on Twitter: Both you and Scoble have commented recently how you've all but given up RSS in favor of Twitter.

Me, I'm still loving Google Reader, although I also get a lot of my news from Twitter. Google Reader is thorough, it's for feeds where I want to at least skim every item. Twitter is for blogs and news sites that only occasionally have something interesting--it's ideal for just skimming headlines.

Although I can definitely see how that might change with Twitter Lists.

Haven't played much with lists (well, at all) but apparently we can add users we don't follow; great for news sources.

(cont...since I spit that out to Twitter) - I really don't want my timeline inundated with breaking news every two seconds and I'm all about looking at at least five sources before drawing any conclusions or spreading / RTing news.

When Twitter (or third party apps) further development for list UX, I'll start making my own. Seriously, right now it's a mess. 1. no way to sort 2. no way to filter and 3. no way to follow w/out lists completely cluttering my screen :(

Lists is terrific (are terrific)? I live in San Diego, and have created one called "San Diego News." I can definitely see creating one for national news (Washington Post, New York Times, Talking Points Memo, Little Green Footballs, etc.) and getting those out of my Google Reader. I also follow several of my favorite iPhone and shareware apps on Twitter Lists, so I can keep an eye out for updates without having to skim through the marketing crap on their official blogs.

I started as a daily newspaper reporter, and we used to have a police scanner sitting on the editor's desk that the entire newsroom could hear, all the time . I *like* continuous news updates. Although often the information I glean from the update is: "Nothing catastrophic going on in the world that I need to worry about."

That is totally true - Twitter is like the new police scanners and lists are the different channels.

I'm still waiting for a good iPhone app. Simply Tweet and Tweetie2 meshed together "Simply Tweetie"...? would be my ideal app.

What are the shortcomings you see in Tweetie2? What do you like about Simply Tweet that's not in Tweetie2?

Notifications - love how there's sound notification for new @replies and the menu is customizable. I also love all the options for a single Tweet. e.g. RT, viewing convo, etc., etc.,

Tweetie2's search is borked, so I miss a lot of replies. Also, DMing is SUCH a pain and doesn't refresh... BUT Tweetie2's pulldown to refresh and "reply all" are two reasons I can't give it completely up!

I'll have to play with Simply Tweet. The sound notifications don't sound appealing to me--I get a lot of retweets, which is great, but I don't want to be notified of everyone. Indeed, one of the things I hope to get out of the new retweet functionality is a way to distinguish RTs from true @mentions.

It's only when the app is open - though I decided to wean myself off Twitter since Tweetie2 AND SimplyTweets have 1UPd my Twitter addiction. I'm blaming it on the apps and sticking to that. ;)
